This post is written after listening to Dr Gerard Barroso’s fertility experts podcast. His insights from contemporary science, combined with my ancient Indian wisdom of Ayurveda and yoga, highlight the need for a holistic approach to fertility.

Infertility is often seen as a straightforward medical condition—According to WHO 2010- if a couple cannot conceive within a year, they are labelled as infertile. However, this perspective oversimplifies a profoundly complex issue. In reality,  infertility is influenced by numerous factors, including lifestyle, environmental toxins, and underlying health conditions that are frequently overlooked. Conventional fertility treatments like IVF often focus solely on the mechanics of conception rather than addressing the root causes. The Ancient Science of Garbhasanskar – Nurturing Fertility Holistically

 

The Indian wisdom of Garbhasanskar provides a structured and time-tested approach to fertility. It emphasises the three foundational aspects of conception: Seed (Sperm & Ovum), Soil (Uterus), and Season (Right Age & Ovulation Time).

  1. Seed (Sperm & Ovum): Just as a healthy seed is essential for a thriving plant, strong and viable sperm and ova are crucial for conception. Ayurveda recommends dietary modifications, herbal support, and lifestyle changes to enhance gamete health. This includes consuming fertility-boosting foods such as soaked almonds, walnuts, sesame seeds, ghee, and milk infused with saffron and ashwagandha.

Additionally, nutrition plays a key role in Garbhasanskar. A balanced diet rich in folate, iron, antioxidants, and Omega-3 fatty acids is recommended to enhance fertility and support a healthy pregnancy.

Flawed Diagnosis of Infertility – The Shocking Truth

The current diagnostic criteria for infertility are primarily based on arbitrary timelines. If a woman under 35 has been trying to conceive for a year without success, or if a woman over 35 has been trying for six months, she is diagnosed with infertility. However, this approach fails to consider individual variations in reproductive health. Many doctors also rely on outdated tests, such as measuring hormone levels on specific cycle days, which may not provide a complete picture of a person’s fertility. Additionally, male fertility is often overlooked or superficially tested despite being responsible for about 40-50% of infertility cases.

Most people assume that miscarriages are random or solely due to genetic abnormalities. While chromosomal issues are common causes, other factors like immune disorders, hormonal imbalances, and underlying infections can contribute to pregnancy loss. Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: Why Waiting for 3+ Miscarriages is a Mistake

Standard medical protocols suggest that doctors only investigate recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) after three consecutive miscarriages. However, waiting for multiple losses before conducting a thorough examination is emotionally and physically taxing. Research suggests that conditions such as thrombophilia (blood clotting disorders), autoimmune conditions, and even nutritional deficiencies can cause recurrent miscarriages. A proactive approach to testing and treatment could prevent unnecessary heartbreak.
